Khoy, a historic city in Iran’s West Azerbaijan province, captivates visitors with its unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and cultural diversity. Located near the Turkish border along the ancient Silk Road, Khoy has been a center of fortification, cultural exchange, and vibrant trade for centuries. The city’s landscape is a stunning mosaic of vast sunflower fields—earning it the nickname “City of Sunflowers”—framed by towering, snow-capped mountains, making it a prime destination for eco-tourists and hikers. The area’s appeal is enhanced by nearby therapeutic hot springs and mineral waters.

Khoy’s heritage is reflected in its many historical sites and landmarks, showcasing influences from the Medes, Achaemenids, Safavids, and Qajar eras. A highlight is the Darvazeh Sangi (Stone Gate), the last surviving stone gateway from the city’s ancient fortifications, which once guarded access to the lively Khoy Bazaar and still bears scars from past conflicts. For those drawn to Persian mysticism, the tomb of 13th-century poet Shams Tabrizi—a UNESCO World Heritage nominee—is a revered pilgrimage destination. The city’s religious and cultural diversity shines in sites like the centuries-old Sorp Serkis Church, a testament to Khoy’s significant Armenian heritage.
