Nestled in the heart of Iran, Arak presents a fascinating blend of industrial heritage alongside rich historical and natural landscapes. As the capital of Markazi Province and a key industrial hub, the city was established nearly two centuries ago during the Qajar dynasty, which explains why many of its prominent landmarks date from that period. Positioned strategically between the Alborz and Zagros mountain ranges, Arak experiences the characteristic climate of Iran’s central plateau, marked by long, cold winters and hot, dry summers. In November 2025, I traveled to Arak by bus from Tehran. The highlight of my visit was the expansive Chahar Fasl (Four Seasons) Bathhouse, the largest historic bathhouse in Iran, uniquely designed with separate sections for different religious communities. The city’s covered bazaar, also from the Qajar era, showcases impressive architecture with straight rows intersecting at right angles, once bustling with vibrant carpet sellers.
