In October 2017, I traveled by train from Tehran to Zanjan. Situated in northwestern Iran, Zanjan boasts a rich history, cultural heritage, and breathtaking natural beauty. As the capital of Zanjan Province, this city is a key economic and administrative hub. Zanjan is celebrated for its stunning Islamic architecture, particularly the Jameh Mosque of Zanjan, which features exquisite tile work and intricate designs. The city is also famous for its traditional handicrafts, especially its high-quality knives and metalwork, showcasing the region’s artisanal heritage. A highlight near the city is the Soltaniyeh Dome, a UNESCO World Heritage site and an architectural gem from the Ilkhanid period. Surrounded by the picturesque Alborz Mountains and lush agricultural fields, Zanjan is a haven for nature enthusiasts. The vibrant bazaars, bustling with local produce and crafts, further enhance the city’s cultural vibrancy, making Zanjan a unique blend of history and modernity.
