Bursa
In 2023, I ferried from Istanbul to Bursa, the first capital of the Ottoman Empire. Visiting Bursa is like stepping into a rich tapestry of history and natural beauty. Nestled at the base of Mount Uludağ, the city boasts remarkable architecture, including the stunning Green Mosque (Yeşil Camii) and the magnificent Bursa Grand Mosque (Ulu Camii), both adorned with intricate tile work and calligraphy. A stroll through the historic Cumalıkızık village, with its charming Ottoman-era houses and cobblestone streets, offers a glimpse into the past, while the bustling local markets entice you with traditional crafts and goods.
Bursa is renowned for its natural hot springs, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and rejuvenation. The thermal baths in the nearby town of Çekirge offer a tranquil retreat, where visitors can indulge in the therapeutic waters. The local cuisine is another highlight, featuring dishes like İskender kebab and the delectable, flaky pastry known as Bursa’s original “börek.” Whether you are delving into its rich heritage, enjoying the lush surroundings, or savoring its culinary delights, Bursa guarantees a delightful and enriching experience.
